  • More than 100 relatives and friends of the 12-member Hjemkomst crew are awaiting the replica Viking ship’s arrival in Bergen, Norway. Yesterday, the ship was about 350 nautical miles from Bergen and is expected to arrive in two or three days.
  • Carlton County Judicial Officer Dale Wolf has been appointed a judge in the Carlton County court system by Gov. Al Quie. Wolf, who was appointed a judicial officer in 1978, fills the vacancy left by Judge Ladean Overlie, who retired July 1.

  • Grading and construction of bridges along the Congdon Boulevard will be finished by Sept. 15, according to R.W. Acton, St. Louis County highway engineer. When the boulevard is completed next year, it will provide a concrete road from Duluth to Two Harbors.
  • More than $2 million in allegedly false claims have been filed against the government for damages incurred in the 1918 forest fires in northern Minnesota. Many of the claims are for losses made on property which investigators say did not exist.
