A wildfire that started a week ago on the island of St. Catherine continues to ignite. At least one fire broke out on the island on Monday afternoon. Dry weather combined with low humidity and high winds pushed the fire to the northern shore of the island. In the Clay Six Courtesy, the view of the fire shows the large fire on the northern tip of the island, with small fires continuing. Extreme levels of drought are expected in many parts of the island, including the coastal part of southeastern Georgia. The total rainfall for 2022 is 8 to 11 inches below average with severe drought. No relief from the dry weather is expected until Thursday or Friday, and after that the chances of rain are very low. The best chance of rain is Saturday because there may be widespread rain or thunderstorms. With more dry weather, high temperatures will return this week, with temperatures reaching 90 degrees on Wednesday and Thursday. The temperature on the beach reaches the lowest 90s.
