The WCFA map uses real-time 911 dispatch call data from PulsePoint, another national service that provides continuous wildfire location and boundary information.
SPOKANE, Wash. – The Spokane Fire Department (SFD) is preparing for the upcoming wildfire season using a new map showing active and recent wildfires in the western United States.
SFD hopes to use the Western Fire Chiefs Association (WCFA) map as a resource during wildfires. Spokane Fire Chief Brian Schaefer wants to use the map as a way to fight fires more effectively and keep people safe.
“That way people can get a little more heads up on exactly what’s going on, where the firefighter is and where the fire is going so they can make better plans,” he said.
The WCFA map uses real-time 911 dispatch call data from PulsePoint, another national service that provides continuous wildfire location and boundary information.
Schaefer said this is the type of project SFD has been waiting for since 2020.
“This project, which includes the city of Spokane’s Western Fire Department, is an organizational priority that allows our community to prepare and adapt to wildland fires,” he said.
On the map, fire boundaries are shown in red, orange and brown colors. The colors represent active fires burning in the last 12, 24, and 24 hours, respectively.
The map is also designed for mobile phones and is made to load quickly. It allows the user to know their location in relation to wildfires. Other improvements, such as fire weather and behavior forecasting, alerts and evacuation routes, are coming soon, Schaefer said.
The map is currently available to the public at no charge. If you want to access the map, you can do so here.
