Grant County recovers from wildfire as holiday weekend approaches

Grant County Sheriff’s Office said fireworks could lead to another heavy brush fire, which could come on the fourth weekend of July.

Grant County, Washington – All evacuation notices in Grant County have been cleared following a wildfire near the Soap Lake.

Meanwhile, two firefighters were injured in a clash between flight crews who responded to the blaze.

The fire was so dangerous that it threatened dozens of homes. The winds made things even more challenging and unexpected for firefighters.

In all, Tuesday’s wildfires burned through Grant County. The fire in Haiti County near Lake Soap has threatened most homes, forcing 3 people to evacuate.

The blaze broke out Tuesday morning around 11 a.m. directly next to Shelley Lewis’ home.

“Worrying about the people, you know, their buildings, their families, their animals, that’s scary,” Lewis said. “That means he could have taken all those houses seriously. They were packing animals, we were watching.”

Shelley believed the wind had saved her property, but pushed the fire east on State Line 28.

“Every fire department in Grant County represents this fire,” said Grant County Emergency Management Specialist and Pio Kyle Forman.

The Grant County Sheriff’s Office escorted KREM 2 on a closed highway to show how close the fire was to the destruction of newly built homes.

“We had moisture and rain and everything,” Forman said. “It does not stop fires in Grant County. This only makes it more fuel and makes it more fuel efficient. So we had very long fuel, very hot heat and wind and everything did that much. To make it worse, to try to control this fire.”

The fourth of July is fast approaching and fireworks are on sale at noon on Tuesday. Most parts of Grant County are legal.

“I want fireworks to be completely banned,” Lewis said.

“Our discussions with firefighters and other agencies here are of great concern for the coming weekend of July,” Forman said. “We are asking people to be very careful with fireworks.”
