In depthHeat waves combined with low rainfall have led to massive forest fires in Europe, a situation that is becoming more common.
From the Gironde to Brittany, France is burning as drought and extreme heat rage. The entire European Union is also suffering from severe weather. And most of the EU’s 27 member states have been affected by fires that have destroyed much more forest areas than the average in previous years.
The European Union mobilized additional aid – notably firefighting aircraft from Greek ships to France, Portugal and Albania – to fight the devastating fires in these three countries.
Summer fires in France and Spain are six times hotter than average. In the eastern part of the continent, these numbers sometimes increase to 50 times, as in Hungary, Slovakia and Switzerland. Although for the last two cases, we are talking about only a few hundred hectares.
